This project is a comprehensive part of the SECO-funded program, which aims at converting the establishment of students’ governments into a tradition based on a real democratic election process and the students’ governments themselves into a consolidated school inner structure that is going to enhance students’ capacity and role in the whole education process.
The project started with a number of visits to each of the target schools and meetings with student government representatives, their teacher coordinators, other students and teachers, school directors, local government officials, parents and other community members.
The other step was the organization of a 3-day exchange workshop by the SECO project and grant coordinators with 70 students and teachers from the 14 SECO project target schools (56 student government representatives and 14 teacher coordinators).
The main purpose of the workshop was to give them the opportunity to share their experiences related to their work, analyze the progress made toward the enhancement of their influence as well as prepare action plans for their future work on strengthening their student governments and increasing their role in the school and community. It also aimed at enriching their knowledge and skills on project design and management as well as resource mobilization.
By the end of the workshop, all the student governments came out with a well-designed project proposal, which was reviewed and evaluated by the SECO project team. In order to support them in their efforts to successfully implement their own projects, we offered our financial support, which was added to other funds that they managed to gather from other resources through various fund-raising campaigns/activities.
Besides the implementation of the newly designed projects, all the student governments organized various activities in their schools and communities, through which they have revealed their gained knowledge and organizational and leadership skills and have become stronger and recognized structures.
Another significant activity was the organization of a two-day exchange workshop by the end of December with 79 student and teacher representatives. The main purpose of this workshop was:
• To get all the student governments project committee representatives and their teacher coordinators of the target schools together in order to exchange their new experience with the project management in their schools and share lessons learned for future work
• To give all the student and teacher representatives the opportunity to talk about the difficulties encountered during their work as well as strengths and achievements
• To make an analysis of the progress achieved throughout the SECO project/program life and changes brought about in their school life through a brief overview of its main moments/activities
• To come out with new ideas and a plan for the continuation of their work in the future (even after the SECO project is completed)
In order to facilitate their future activities and further support the strengthening of the student governments and the enhancement of their role in each of the target schools, all of them were provided with supportive materials such as bookshelves where they can keep their own documentations, digital cameras, white paper, markers, staplers and so on. Many of the student governments, based on their continuous request, were also provided with a voice amplifier, which will help them tremendously in successfully organizing various activities in their schools.
